Glittery Week 4 Reflections

A snapshot of Week 4 in #EME6414 Web 2.0

Week 4 of #EME6414 asked myself and my peers to begin applying Web 2.0 practices to curate a small collection of materials and online resources, promote our collection using Web 2.0 tools and create a presentation detailing the analytic outcomes of sharing our curated collection.

I decided to use Pinterest to create a collection of resources related to my professional and personal interest areas and had a wonderful time building my online following this past month! If you are unfamiliar with Pinterest, check out the Nuclino page I created for our #EME6414 group for a more formal introduction to this Web 2.0 tool!

Visit the Always Add Glitter Pinterest and then watch my VoiceThread presentation discussing the value of Pinterest, how to promote your brand using Pinterest, and outcomes related to targeted online promotion and overall effect on global engagement.

After significant engagement with this Web 2.0 tool I absolutely think the social media tool Pinterest has a place in formal learning environments.

According to Gilly Salmona, Bella Rossb, Ekaterina Pechenkinac and Anne-Marie Chased's article The space for social media in structured online learning, "When deployed for learning, social media can facilitate the development of online communities, allowing for collaborative and participatory engagement by placing emphasis on collective knowledge and social interaction".

Pinterest provides multiple opportunities for actively participating in an online community including the option to collaborate on creating boards (collective knowledge), message users through the system (social interaction) and develop an online community (For example, the #EME6414 Pinterest page).

Additionally, the article shares "social media can help strengthen the social relationships among students, heighten students’ self-esteem, and boost their learning performance". By integrating Pinterest into the classroom students can collaborate on creating and curating online resources to enhance both their educational and social & emotional development.

Could 7th grade students in American History be challenged to create Pinterest boards on different historic occurrences they've studied throughout the year? Tasks could be compiling online study guides, interactive timelines and online flashcards etc. to create a holistic study guide for the final exam!

Overall it was a great week expanding the Always Add Glitter community through Pinterest! However, with all my classes wrapping up in the next two weeks, I am looking forward to the end of the rainbow!

Have a great week!

XO,

Michelle
