How to add glitter to your team communiciation

Communication, one of the most important skills employers look for when compiling a team of professionals.

The ability to communicate in our digital day and age far surpasses having vocal communication abilities, today's professional needs to be digitally literate and able to use multiple platforms to chat with team members and clients alike.

However, communicating with clients and communicating with team members looks much different; with team members we can be more informal and to-the-point, with clients additional formalities may be needed and background information provided before launching into a question or sharing a comment.

Today I want to share a tool that will help you add glitter to your team communication: Slack

Slack is a communication tool that helps users create teams, organize chats, upload and share files and so much more!

To showcase the features of Slack, I hosted a virtual interview with frequent Slack users Garrett Rosenthal and Joshua Romm using the platform!

The screenshots below will help show you what the interface looks like along with provide information on how those professionals use Slack to enhance their communication. Let's dive in!

The below interview is a conversation with Garrett Rosenthal. A unique feature about Slack is that you must be invited to join a team and the invite sender can set your name within the group. You are able to change the name they assign you, but I went ahead and stuck with the name Garrett provided to show exactly how the platform is used. (My nickname is Meesh)

The below conversation is a new chat Garrett made to show how tags work. Garrett tagged me using the @ feature of Slack. He added Joshua Romm into the conversation and used the @ feature to tag him as well.

As you can see, Slack provides so many ways to always add glitter to your team communication!

Summary of Slack features based on the interviews:

  • Slack is great for asking quick questions, sending informal chats and saying hello to other professionals who also use Slack

  • You must be invited to join a Slack channel, so while it is social communication is is not necessarily a social media interface

  • Users can tag other Slack users to ask targeted questions and begin new channels

  • Users can easily drag and drop photos, videos and files into conversations

  • Conversations can be organized using #hashtags

  • When discussing meetings that include a date and time, using email would be best so that meeting can be added directly to your calendar. Though Slack can also send daily, weekly and monthly reminders

  • Slack makes communication fun through the use of embedding giphy!

What about Slack do you think is cool? Do you think your team would/could use Slack to add glitter to their communication? Please share your thoughts in the comments below!

XO,

Michelle
